Memorial Health System???s Diabetes Education Center Merits ADA Recognition
The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was recently awarded to the Diabetes Education Center for the period of July 18th
, 2014 – July 18th
, 2018. The ADA believes that this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of diabetes management.
“We are all very excited at the Diabetes Education Center to extend our American Diabetes Association recognition for another four years. We work hard to provide the best diabetes experience for our patients and to serve the community needs. We have three Certified Diabetes Educators in our program. We also have ADA expanded sites where we can see patients for diabetes education in Belpre and the Wayne Street campus”, explains Kathy Reis, program coordinator for the Diabetes Education Center.
The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. The 2014 National Diabetes Fact Sheet has updated the diabetes numbers to 29.1 million people with diabetes or 9.3% of the population. It is estimated that 8.1 million people are not aware that they have diabetes. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications – heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve disease and amputation.
