April 26, 2013 - Memorial Health System Participating in Swab – A – Thon
The Memorial Health System’s Strecker Cancer Center is partnering local residents to conduct a Swab – a – Thon for local resident Angie Smith Bussey. The event is will take place Monday, April 29 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Town Square Building – the Judge Annex Building in downtown Parkersburg, WV.
“Angie Bussey is in serious need of a bone marrow donor after having been diagnosed with leukemia,” says Cortney Beymer, LSW, Strecker Cancer Center Belpre. “If you are interested in joining the national bone marrow registry and seeing if you are a match for Angie, come see us.”
Cheek swabs are painless and used to identify blood and tissue matches. Participants will have their information put into the national bone marrow registry. There are 73 different diseases that are helped with a bone marrow transplant. Only one in three patients will match a family member so roughly two-thirds of those in need of a transplant have to go through the national bone marrow registry.
“If you are joining the drive, you must be commited to donate,” Beymer says. “The registry is restricted to people between the ages of 18 and 61 who do not have a history of cancer or other blood-borne disease. If you are called, you are a person’s last hope and it is the ultimate gift you can give to someone.”
If you can’t attend the Swab-a-Thon Monday, contact Beymer for more information at (740) 401-0257.
