A Dietitian’s Role in Your Healthcare

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining your optimal health. Many chronic diseases can be prevented and better managed with healthy eating habits. With confusing and conflicting nutrition information, it may seem like an impossible task at times.

As part of your medical team, a dietitian’s goal is to assist in the treatment and prevention of disease by providing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). A registered dietitian can help make sense of confusing nutrition information and direct you towards beneficial diet changes based on recommendations from scientific research.

If you have multiple chronic diseases and are confused with the diet information you have been given, a dietitian is one of the few people that can simplify the diet information you may have received to address your conditions.

Whether your goal is weight loss, weight gain, diabetes management, diabetes prevention, heart healthy eating, eliminating exposure to food allergens, diet with kidney disease, etc., a dietitian can assist you with setting and reaching individualized nutritional goals. By discussing your goals and reviewing your eating habits, a dietitian can help direct you toward realistic changes that will be easier to maintain in the long term.

If you are interested in visiting with an outpatient dietitian, ask your doctor if a referral for MNT is right for you. With a physician's referral, you can make an appointment to see a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with Memorial Health System.
