, ,
Narrowing of the valve between the lower left heart chamber and the body’s main artery.
Description
Aortic valve stenosis is a type of heart valve disease. The valve is narrowed and can’t open fully. Blood flow to the body is reduced. The heart has to work harder to pump blood. Over time, this can make the heart weak and may lead to heart failure.
Overview
Some people don’t have symptoms. If symptoms happen, they may include chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath, fainting, and a rapid, fluttering heartbeat. Children with aortic stenosis may not eat enough or gain enough weight.
Symptoms
If aortic valve stenosis is mild, regular health checkups may be all that’s needed. Other treatments include lifestyle changes, medicines and surgery to repair or replace the valve.
