Description
An atheroma is a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in an artery and on the artery walls. It’s commonly called plaque. It can make an artery narrow and block blood flow. If an atheroma breaks open, a blood clot can form. An atheroma may be found when tests are done for another health condition.
Overview
There may not be any symptoms. Symptoms depend on whether blood flow is reduced or blocked.
Symptoms
Treatment includes lifestyle changes. Eat healthy, get regular exercise and do not smoke. Other treatments may include medicines, a heart procedure or surgery.
