Description

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone. Costochondritis is sometimes known as chest wall pain syndrome. The pain sometimes can be like that of a heart attack. The cause is unknown.


Overview

Costochondritis pain often happens on the breastbone’s left side and affects more than one rib. Symptoms get worse with deep breaths or coughing.


Symptoms

Costochondritis often goes away on its own, but it might last for several weeks or longer. Treatments may include pain-relieving medicines, stretching exercises or steroid injections.
