, ,
A condition in which the coiled tube at the back of a testicle, called the epididymis, becomes inflamed.
Description
Epididymitis can happen at any age. Most often, the condition is caused by a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections. The risk of epididymitis is higher in people who have sex without a condom.
Overview
With epididymitis, testicle pain and tenderness might come on slowly and affect one side. Pain also might be felt in the lower stomach or pelvic areas. The bag of skin that holds the testicles may become swollen, discolored or warm.
Symptoms
Epididymitis treatment often includes medicines called antibiotics that clear up infections caused by bacteria. It also can help to rest, wear an athletic supporter, apply ice packs wrapped in a towel and take pain medicine bought without a prescription. Sometimes, surgery is needed.
