A long-term condition in which the heart doesn’t pump blood as well as it should.

Description

Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, happens when the heart doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. Blood backs up and fluid can collect in the lungs. Heart failure can be life-threatening. Some heart conditions slowly make the heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump blood properly.

Overview

Symptoms include shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, swelling in the legs, ankles and feet, and rapid or irregular heartbeat. Some people have a cough that doesn’t go away. The cough may bring up white or pink mucus with spots of blood. Rapid weight gain is another symptom.

Symptoms

Treatment may depend on the cause. Medicines are used to treat heart failure and help symptoms. Lifestyle changes also are important. Eat healthy, use less salt, do not smoke, and manage weight. A heart transplant or a device to help the heart pump blood may be needed.
