Hypovolemia

A condition in which the volume of blood plasma or certain other body fluids becomes too low.


Description

Hypovolemia often happens due to the loss of salt and water. Risk factors include vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding, use of diuretic medicine and not drinking enough fluids.


Overview

Hypovolemia symptoms can include dizziness, fatigue, confusion, cramps, chest or stomach pain, and increased heart rate. Without treatment, it sometimes can lead to low blood pressure, shock or death.


Symptoms

Hypovolemia treatment involves replacing lost fluids and minerals through a needle in a vein. For some people, this treatment involves receiving donated blood. The cause of hypovolemia also is treated.
