Infectious mononucleosis

A disease caused by a virus that spreads through saliva.


Description

The virus that causes infectious mononucleosis, also called mono, can be spread through kissing. It also can be passed by sharing a glass or food utensils with an infected person.


Overview

Mono symptoms can include fatigue, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits, swollen tonsils, and rash. Teens and young adults are most likely to get mono with all of the symptoms.


Symptoms

Mono treatment involves getting rest, eating healthy and drinking fluids. Pain relievers can ease a fever or sore throat. Antibiotics may be needed for infections caused by bacteria that can occur along with mono.
