Perianal abscess

A collection of pus in the tissue around the anus and rectum.


Description

Perianal abscess is usually caused by anal infection or blocked glands. It can result when germs are passed between sexual partners or from a condition such as Crohn’s disease or diverticulitis.


Overview

Symptoms include anal or buttock pain and swelling, constipation, and fever.


Symptoms

Surgery is the standard treatment for perianal abscess. Antibiotics also may be used in some situations.
