Description

Portal hypertension is high blood pressure in the vein that carries blood from the intestine to the liver, called the portal vein. It’s often caused by liver scarring, called cirrhosis.


Overview

Symptoms include swelling and discomfort in the belly, confusion, and bloody stools. The whites of the eyes and the skin may look yellow. Depending on skin color, these changes may be harder or easier to see.


Symptoms

Treatments may include reducing salt use and taking medicines. Surgery or a liver transplant may be needed.
