The physical and emotional changes of premenstrual syndrome, also called PMS, vary from slight to intense. The symptoms tend to follow a monthly pattern. They most often go away within four days after the start of a period.

PMS symptoms include mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, tiredness, and feeling cranky and depressed. They also can include joint or muscle pain, headache, and bloating.

Treatments for PMS may include lifestyle changes, prescription medicines and pain relievers available without a prescription to reduce symptoms.
