Tetralogy of Fallot

April, 2nd, 2025

, ,

A rare condition involving four heart changes present at birth.

Description

Tetralogy of Fallot is four changes in heart structure present at birth. That means it is a congenital heart defect. There is a hole in the heart and changes with a heart valve and the body’s main artery. The lower right heart chamber wall is thickened. The changes cause low blood oxygen levels. Having German measles during pregnancy, also called rubella, or a family history of tetralogy of Fallot may raise the risk.

Overview

Tetralogy of Fallot symptoms include shortness of breath and rapid breathing. The skin, lips and nails may be blue or gray, depending on skin color. Babies with tetralogy of Fallot may cry longer than usual. They may be cranky and sleepier than is typical. They also may have poor weight gain.

Symptoms

Tetralogy of Fallot treatment involves surgery to fix the heart. More than one surgery may be needed. Medicines may be given to improve blood flow. Some people born with tetralogy of Fallot may have to limit certain activities. Regular health checkups are needed for life.
