Trichinosis

A type of roundworm infection.


Description

Trichinosis infection, sometimes called trichinellosis, is caused a roundworm parasite. It spreads to humans when people eat raw or undercooked meat infected with the parasite. Over weeks, the larvae from the meat grow into adult worms in the human intestine.


Overview

People with a mild infection may have no symptoms. More serious infections can cause symptoms 1 to 2 days after infection. People might have loose stools, stomach pain, tiredness and vomiting. Roundworms that infect muscle tissue also can cause longer term symptoms. These include high fever and chills, aching joints, and muscle pain or tenderness.


Symptoms

If treatment is needed, medicines may be used to help clear out the parasites, manage pain or control pain and swelling.
