Trichomoniasis

May, 25th, 2024

, ,

A sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite.

Description

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. The parasite is spread by contact with genitals. For pregnant people, trichomonas infection can lead to a risk of early delivery, birth complications, and low birth weight babies. Also, it is possible for a baby to get the infection during birth.

Overview

Most people have no symptoms of trichomoniasis. But over time, the infection can cause a foul-smelling discharge from the vagina and genital itching. And it can make urinating or having sex painful for women.

Symptoms

Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotic medicine. All sex partners need treatment at the same time to avoid spreading the infection again right away. Treatment involves taking one large dose or a few smaller doses of the antibiotic.
