A condition that occurs from drinking too much water, upsetting electrolyte balances.
Description
Water intoxication comes from drinking too much water or retaining water. This can decrease sodium in the blood to dangerously low levels, causing mild to life-threatening problems. People who have heavy sweat loss during work or activities are at risk.
Overview
Confusion, nausea and vomiting are symptoms. Severe cases can cause seizures, coma and death.
Symptoms
If you suspect water intoxication, seek medical care. Treatments are fluid restriction, IV fluids high in sodium and medicines.
