Leg pain

Physical discomfort in part or all of the leg that can vary in strength.


Description

Rest and elevate leg when possible. Pain relievers available without a prescription, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve), can help ease pain.


Self-care

See a health care professional immediately if:

  • Injury with a deep cut or exposed bone or tendon.
  • Hear a popping or grinding sound at time of injury.
  • Unable to walk or bear weight.
  • Redness, warmth or fever.
  • Cool temperature, pale skin and trouble finding pulse.

When to seek immediate medical care

Make an appointment to see a health care professional if:

  • Swelling in both legs.
  • Pain worsens.
  • No improvement with home care.
  • Occurs during or after walking.
