Ankle pain

Physical discomfort in the ankle area, often including the joint or the tendon that connects the lower leg to the heel, called the Achilles tendon.


Description

Rest the ankle, and elevate it when possible. Apply ice pack up to 20 minutes, three times a day, and wrap the ankle with a compression bandage. Pain medicines you can get without a prescription may help.


Self-care

See a healthcare professional immediately for:

  • Obvious injury.
  • Serious pain or swelling.
  • Signs of infection, such as fever.
  • Trouble walking or putting weight on the ankle.

When to seek immediate medical care

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • Swelling doesn’t improve within five days.
  • Pain lasts for a few weeks.
  • Pain limits ability to work, walk or complete daily tasks.
