Patricia B. Mickunas, MD

Psychiatry & Neurology, Psychiatry

"I practice psychiatry within a team-oriented approach that may include other physicians, psychologists, nurses, staff, patients and their significant others but always with the patient at the center. I am grateful that my training fully prepared me to utilize a bio-psycho-social model to address my patient’s concerns. It is humbling that patients trust me to hear their distress."

What is a Psychiatrist?

As a psychiatrist, Dr. Mickunas specializes in mental health including, cognitive, emotional, and social processes as well as behavior by observing, and interpreting how individuals relate to one another and to their environments.

Education and Experience

Patricia Mickunas, MD completed her psychiatry medicine residency at Wright State University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry in Dayton, Ohio. She earned her medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine as well. Dr. Mickunas is a member of American Psychiatric Association and Ohio Psychiatric Physician Association. She is also board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr Mickunas grew up in the deep South where storytelling is part of the cultural tradition. Her grandmother’s stories, handed down from her grandmother, shaped her childhood. These stories still inspire Dr. Mickunas as a person and as a professional. In psychiatry, she uses the telling of and listening to stories every day to help patients. And then science…. In the late 1980’s, while working as a beekeeper for the Peace Corps in South America, Dr. Mickunas held bees by their wings and carefully stung the swollen knuckles of a local farmer to treat his arthritis. That was the first time she remembers the satisfaction of relieving pain directly. When she went to medical school, she learned the science of why that had worked and is grateful for the medical training to understand many of life’s miracles. Dr. Mickunas’s goal is to use my knowledge and experience to help patients relieve their pain through their own strength, with her help.
